May 2024 Member Spotlight: Brandon Crumby

As we climb this ladder to tech greatness together, it’s only appropriate that the spotlight is placed on the ones who make this journey what it is: our #TTH family!
This month, we’re acknowledging and applauding #TTH community member Brandon Crumby.
Brandon is among our most engaged contributors and just so happens to be one of my mentees. We asked him a few questions about where he is in his tech journey, what he wants to get out of his current project, his thoughts on the #TTH community, and his plans for the future.

Can you share a little about your tech journey so far?
This marks the inception of my tech journey. I have a keen interest in developing a strong foundation in programming through a Python course and enhancing my understanding of security through an introductory cybersecurity course. I've had a fascination with technology (specifically computers and game consoles) since my early childhood. Currently, I'm involved in the Launchpad2DataEng project to explore data analysis and engineering.
What field in tech are you pursuing?
I am currently exploring various fields within technology to find where my interests align best, whether it's in software engineering, DevOps, data science or game development. However, I am beginning to identify areas of interest that I can focus on/specialize in. My aim is to develop a somewhat versatile skill set initially to become well-rounded by the time I find my niche.
Why did you join #TTH, and what’s your favorite thing about being part of this community?
I joined #TTH through an invitation from my mentor (Bobby Dorlus) who has been helping me develop essential skills in preparation for my entry into tech. Furthermore, he's been very supportive of this first project.
What stands out to me about this community is its diverse and inclusive nature, where everyone shares a passion for tech. It's a fantastic resource for learning and personal growth, and I look forward to both contributing to and learning from this vibrant group.
What does greatness mean to you?
Greatness, to me, means continuously growing, cultivating a growth mindset, consistently moving towards fulfilling one's maximum potential, closely aligning actions with core values, helping others, and ultimately making this world a better place for current/future generations.
How did the idea for the Launchpad2DataEng project come about, and what do you hope to achieve through it?
The idea was sparked by an inspirational research experiment in which a software engineer designed an AI bot to explore a virtual world autonomously. The AI successfully navigated this virtual world without prior knowledge by implementing a reinforcement learning algorithm (Proximal Policy Optimization). After thousands of virtual simulations, the engineer analyzed the data to study the bot's decisions. In addition, he recognized and highlighted the parallels between the algorithm’s behavior and human behavior.
What’s one thing you’ve learned in the last month that you believe will help propel you to tech greatness?
Recently, I've been focused on mastering Python, from its syntax to functional applications like loops and variables. Understanding this fundamental knowledge is crucial, as it deepens my engagement in tech projects and solving complex problems, setting a solid groundwork for my future in technology.
