First comes hustle, then comes greatness...
What’s shaking, tech family!
How are things in your corner of the world? Hoping all is great.
Listen, I’m very excited—not just about this installment of the #TheTechHustle Newsletter 📰, but about everything the #TTH crew has going on.
Trust me when I tell you THE HUSTLE DOES NOT STOP!
Y’all feel that?! A lot of greatness in the atmosphere! That means the time is now.
Let’s get to the next rung together!
As always: If you’re new here, WELCOME. If you’re true here, WELCOME BACK!
👨🏾💻 From Conferences to Code Commits and More…
👨🏾💻:Alright, so if you’ve been around longer than a day, you might know that #TheTechHustle team was in none other than Atlanta last month.
We showed up for the culture at not one but two tech events: #NSBE50 Convention and Atlanta Cloud Conference 2024.
Great things all around. I can’t say enough about the energy or the experiences.
Feel free to check out last month’s newsletter for a full recap of our time in Atlanta.
I’d do it all again if I could—and that leads me to my next point.
The speech I gave at the Atlanta Cloud Conference at Kennesaw State covered a really cool topic—Behind the Cloud at Twitter 1.0—and was what I’d consider to be a ‘techie’ talk.
And when I think about it, it’s one of those topics that I wouldn’t mind traveling the country to talk about more. Maybe as a part of a #TTH tour type of thing.
That said, the team and I are working on making that happen! This would give us the opportunity to meet more mentees and community members and really grow this thing in all directions.
Hopefully we’ll be pulling up in your city sometime this year! What do y’all think about that?
Of course, we’ll keep you all posted on our plans and the moves we’re making. See below spots already on the LIST:
Black Is Tech Conference: August 19-21, Houston, TX
Thrive Conference (Black Men in Tech): October 10-13, Fort Lauderdale, FL
All Things Open: October 27-29, Raleigh, NC
Afrotech: November 13-16, Houston, TX
In the meantime, visit the #TTH Instagram to see what we have going on.
Also, I’ll be uploading my full Atlanta Cloud Conference speech to #TheTechHustle YouTube channel in the near future, so be on the lookout for that.
SHAMELESS PLUG: I can’t talk about it enough! Our new #TheTechHustle Community 🤝🏽 is where you’ll get the gems and knowledge you need to push you ahead in the tech game. Come join 140+ of your peers and meet and interact with like-minded techies. Let’s go!
🎙️ 🎟️ Backstage with BobbyD!
Yoooooo…remember when I told y’all we had a new segment that would be hitting the airways soon? Well, it’s here! Backstage with BobbyD is in full effect!
And we already have two episodes in the books. 🎊
These discussions put me in the same room two very brilliant minds who are paving their own paths in tech. These women were gracious enough to sit down and talk with me, BobbyD, about their journeys and experiences in tech, and what it’s been like navigating both pitfalls and opportunities.
Check out these snippets from my ‘backstage’ conversations with my first two guests, Catalina Peña (@curiouscata) and Ebun Aluko (@ebu.nn).
For full episodes of Backstage with BobbyD, head over to #TTH YouTube channel.
💻 New GitHub Repository: Launchpad2DataEng
Believe me when I tell you the #TTH Skool community has been showing out with their tech knowledge!
If you haven’t joined us over there, I don’t know what you’re waiting on. The vibe and energy are unmatched, and every day is about learning and leveling up. ⬆️
Right now, though, I want to quickly tell you about a new GitHub project we have underway called Launchpad2DataEng. The idea was presented by one of our own community members, Brandon Crumby. Brandon came into the community with the goal of leveling up his skills and looking for help with developing a project that would allow him to do just that.
The project is set up to serve as a launchpad for a data engineering career, and so we’re focused on providing you with the foundational skills you’ll need for that.
The repository is already filled with a lot of starter code, and now we’re looking for other brilliant minds (aka YOU) to join and get involved. We want all of you to contribute to this open-source project hosted at #TheTechHustle.
Shoutout to Brandon!
Stay tuned for a full ‘Community Spotlight 🔦’ writeup on him and his amazing idea that’ll be published early May.
💡 Raymond’s Nuggets!
It wouldn’t be a newsletter if I didn’t hand the mic to Raymond to bless us with new nuggets to add to our tech toolbelt!
Call him wise and call him prepared, just don’t call him RayRay!
Raymond Similien🤷🏾♂️:
ℹ️ Qwant 🔒
With the increasing concerns about privacy—especially in this era of AI—it’s refreshing to know that we have at least one option for protecting our data while online.
A French search engine called Qwant is building its reputation as the search engine “that doesn’t know anything about you.” The focus with this one is privacy—not tracking, not gathering and reselling data, not search-result bias. Just privacy.
It’s been around since 2013 but is gaining some popularity due to its recent partnership with Firefox.
ℹ️ Glassdoor 🔍
The job search and career community Glassdoor is an invaluable resource for those in the tech space.
On Glassdoor, you have access to:
Company background information
Interview questions (and how to answer)
Salary histories for specific roles
Employee sentiment and reviews on their companies, workplaces, and positions
We recommend using Glassdoor as a way to stay in-the-know and prepared for the moves you’re making (and want to make) in your tech journey.
📰 DHustle’s News & Current Events (April)
DHustle💆🏽♂️:
The nuggets keep us on our toes and the news keeps us knowing!
Coming to the stage, ladies and gentlemen, is D’Hustle to share the biggest headlines of the month!
MicroLED Galaxy Watch by Samsung: Word in the tech streets is that Samsung has plans to develop and release a Galaxy Watch with a microLED display by 2025. Can they do it? We don’t know, especially considering how Apple has tried its hand at microLED technology and been less-than-successful.
It’s worth keeping your fingers crossed for, though, because this type of move could really set Samsung at the front of the mobile technology race. We’ll be keeping our ears open to news on any progress made toward this ambitious goal.
Impending TikTok Ban: A ban on TikTok could be happening sooner than later. The US government is requiring that the company sells some of its assets to an American company, otherwise it’ll be bye-bye to the Chinese-owned video app.
AirTags on Sale: Whether you’re a faithful AirTag user or have been thinking about picking up a couple, now is the time to buy them. Right now, you can score a pack of four for $80 (reg: $99). It’s not often they go on sale, so don’t hesitate to make that purchase if you want some or need more.
👋🏾…Not Goodbye, Just See You Later…
Alright, peeps.
Our time here has concluded, but don’t let that stop your hustle!
Hopefully there’s some info you found valuable in this newsletter. Take what resonates and use it to get you started on the next phase of your tech journey.
This ladder isn’t going to climb itself.
Until next time! Peace…✌🏾
